Is Your Cash Receipt Toxic?

It will be a common occurrence that your cash register will run out of paper from time to time. The paper roles i your cash register are special fine paper that is coated with a chemical known as BPA, and are called thermal paper.

Thermal paper that is coated with the chemical BPA, usually changes when it is exposed to heat. Thermal roles are commonly used in cash registers, and in credit card terminals. When heated, the coating usually turns black, but can also turn blue and red, when it is exposed to flame. Thermal paper was invented in the early 1990’s and with the development of Polaroid Zink, the coating now rely on multilayer coating, with layers of three different colors. Thermal paper is also used in laser printing and electro photography. 

If you are running an establishment, which sells products, you will no doubt use a cash register. The cash register you take for granted, usually has a useful thermal register rolls, which can run out from time to time. Therefore when your cash register runs out of thermal paper, you will be required to purchase one to keep your business operations smooth and unhindered. You can easily purchase one online, at the click of your mouse. Thermal papers, contains four different typed of imaging chemicals. These are, leuco dyes, developers, sensitizes, and stabilizes.

Research has now found out, that cash register receipts contain high levels of the chemical BPA. This is the same chemical that was recently banned from, plastic water bottles. It is very harmful and carries long term health risks. Research has also found out, that cash register receipts which contain BPA, when touched, can spike blood levels. It’s worse, if they have hand lotion or sanitizer on their hands. This chemical is highly dangerous, and is proven to damage infants, children and even fetuses. It can cause cancer, immune and metabolism problems in adults.

The BPA that is contained in thermal paper, quite simply your cash receipts, will be absorbed rapidly into your blood. It can also interfere with the hormones of estrogen and testosterone, and therefore is highly dangerous. However, we may not see a decrease in use of thermal paper, any time soon, as they are highly functional. As the BPA sits on the surface of plastic coated paper, it can be easily absorbed into the skin, therefore it’s a good idea to refrain from sunscreen, hand lotions and hand sanitizers, as these can make absorption of BPA all the more stronger. 80 X 80 thermal rolls, used only in receipt printers, and can be easily purchased online.

A word of caution will be to touch cash receipts less and not wear hand lotion, or sanitizer, when you come in to contact with thermal paper. Face it; you may touch cash register receipts every day. Therefore it’s good to practice caution, as prevention is indeed better than cure.
